PAAs/PCAs/Academic Fellows
Peer Academic Advisors, or “PAAs”, are students that have been broadly trained in numerous areas of academic life here at Rice and serve as liaisons between students, faculty advisors, and the Office of Academic Advising. Generally speaking, college PAA teams coordinate numerous group and individual activities that attempt to strengthen the academic vitality at their respective residential colleges. PAAs offer accurate advice regarding specific classes, research opportunities, studying abroad, academic rules, regulations, and procedures, and any topic as it relates to academics at Rice. Even if a particular PAA cannot answer each and every detailed question, as fellow students, they can serve as familiar and approachable contacts who can point students in the right direction of the proper resources. In this way, interactions between academics, learning, and especially advising are ongoing dynamic conversations which involve multiple perspectives, not just a prescription for registration. Don't hesitate to ask any of them if you need help with your academic plans!
Peer Academic Advisors (PAAs)
Peer Career Advisors (PCAs) serve as ambassadors to undergraduates and play a valuable role in supporting the Center for Career Development (CCD). PCAs reinforce the knowledge, skills, and resources offered through the CCD. PCAs are specially trained to assist you with topics including resume and cover letter reviews, how to use Handshake, job and internship basics and understanding CCD services. Each residential college has their own set of PCAs, so they are easily accessible and available to answer your questions in person or through email, even when the CCD is closed for the night. Each residential college has a number of Academic Fellows, upperclassmen selected based on proven academic achievement and demonstrated willingness to help fellow students. Fellows offer free academic assistance on a regular basis (“office hours” in the college commons), conduct review sessions leading up to midterms, and provide individual tutoring by request. Additionally, Lovett’s Academic Fellows organize the annual Lovett Undergraduate Research Symposium (LURS), an opportunity for Lovett students to present their research and compete for prestige and cash prizes.
